In a previous post, I talked about how empowering it is to abide by principles. I enjoy writing about the principle of Honor because I’ve found it to be an extremely empowering principle. In fact, the most rewarding spiritual discipline I’ve ever engaged in is the practice of Honor. The Bible says, “Honor your father and mother…so that it may go well with you.” (Ephesians 6:2-3) The practice of honor actually makes OUR life go better!
Here are just a few of the ideas I’ve come up with on how to display honor. What do you do to honor the fathers and mothers in your life?
1.) Show Interest: I know your life is TOTALLY more interesting than your parents’. However, taking time to understand the passions they’re committing these years of their lives to will communicate enormous value.
2.) Visit: For Real. When’s the last time you initiated a trip home?
3.) Be Responsive: It’s hard for parents to feel the honor you have for them if they also feel like they’re on the bottom of your to-do list. If your parents reach out, answer the phone. Return the email. Let them know they’re important to you.
4.) Communicate Appreciation: Dig deep into your chest of memories and find the right things your parents did that made you who you are…then, thank them for it.
5.) Seek Advice: Honor values and puts weight on the input of parents. Before you make your decision, sincerely seek out what your parents have to say.
Remember that Honor is not an action! It’s a posture of the heart. No amount of action can make up for a heart that is not honoring. However, actions are great ways to practice working honor into your lifestyle and releasing what’s in your heart toward your parents.
